A very rare healthy American chestnut is pictured in Jackson County, Tenn. This is one of the largest surviving trees in the South, though it has been marked by blight. The species had been dominant in the region until a blight caused by an Asian fungus began killing them in New York in the early 1900s. The blight reached Highlands in the 1920s, virtually eliminating chestnuts from the forest. Photo courtesy of The American Chestnut Foundation.
