Rain, snow and windy weather couldn’t stop the Highlands Middle School Lady Highlanders from putting on a dominating performance against the Murphy Middle School Lady Bulldogs last Friday, 4-0.

“I was really happy with how they played tonight,” coach Rachel Wilson said. “They passed the ball really well and moved up and down the field really well. We’ve practicing for three weeks without any games. So, it was really good to get out on the field and see them play. I liked the way they were taking shots and playing as a team together.”

Things got started in the first half with 19:30 left to go, when Kayden Pierson had a shot on the right side of the 18-yard box. The Lady Bulldog keeper saved it, but Charlotte Westendorf followed up to put it in the back of the net to go up 1-0.

With 8:50 left in the half, a penalty kick was awarded to the Lady Highlanders after a handball in the 18-yard box. Pierson buried the penalty kick to increase the Lady Highlander lead 2-0.

Westendorf kept things going for the Lady Highlanders with 2:33 left in the half. She dribbled through the Murphy defense and slid past the keeper to make it 3-0 going into the half.

With 16:40 left in the game, Highlands was given another penalty kick after another handball in the box from the Murphy defense. Kayden Pierson stepped up to the spot again and found the back of the net to end the Lady Highlander scoring effort at 4-0.

Wilson said the focus for this season is all about fun.

“A lot of these girls haven’t played before,” Wilson said. “We are working on developing skills for the ones that are moving up to varsity and learning how to pass the ball and not react. Some girls haven’t played before, so we are just making sure to fine-tune their skills.”
