Following the conclusion of basketball season, the Plateau saw the start of schools’ respective girls soccer and golf seasons, with Blue Ridge Early College girls soccer finishing the week 1-1-1 and Highlands and BREC’s boys golf teams competing at Sequoyah National.
Soccer
BREC kicked off its season with three matches throughout the week. On March 3, the Lady Bobcats defeated Hayesville 1-0 behind a crucial Analee Russell goal.
“I’m very proud of these girls and the potential they are already showing,” said Assistant Coach Kristina McCall. “As of game time on Monday, we had held one team practice due to the basketball team making it to the second round of the state playoffs. This team exhibits perseverance and coachability, and I’m excited to see what this season brings for them.”
Analee Russell continued her early-season surge with another goal in the Lady Bobcat’s 3-1 defeat against Cherokee High School on March 5. They finished out the week with a 1-1 draw against Macon Early College on March 6.
Highlands School’s varsity girls soccer was scheduled to face Summit Charter Thursday, March 5 but the game was postponed. Highlands Athletic Director Brett Lamb was announced as the new head coach on Friday, March 6.
Golf
The Highlands School boys varsity golf team opened its season Monday, March 2 at Sky Valley Country Club in a competition hosted by Franklin High School. The Highlanders finished fourth with a collective team score of 209.
Sam Conner led Highlands with a round of 44. Gavin Small carded a 53, and Chase Kenter followed with a 54.
At the Smoky Mountain Conference match at Sequoyah National Tuesday, March 3, Highlands placed second while Blue Ridge Early College finished fourth. Conner and Rowen Carnes led the Highlanders with 49, tying for second place.
For BREC, Dakota Kinsey shot a 57, Colton Mathes posted a 58 and Willian Russel and Carlos Mojica-Rodriguez each finished with a 62.
Highlands shot a 205 and BREC posted a 239.
